Whether you’re escaping the winter chill for a sunny getaway, storing your vehicle during an off-season, or preparing for an extended work trip, knowing how to properly store your car can save you money and stress in the long run. At DRIVELUX MOTORS, we understand the value of maintaining your vehicle’s condition—even when it’s not being driven. This guide will walk you through essential steps to ensure your car stays in great shape while in long-term storage.
Clean Inside and Out Before You Store
Start by giving your vehicle a thorough cleaning—inside and out. Dirt, grime, and road salt can damage the paint and undercarriage if left untreated, especially during winter storage. Likewise, crumbs or moisture left in the interior can attract pests or lead to mold growth.
Wash and wax the exterior to create a protective barrier, and don’t forget to clean the wheels and underbody. On the inside, vacuum carpets, wipe down surfaces, and remove any perishables or clutter. This simple step prevents long-term damage and makes your vehicle feel fresh when you’re ready to hit the road again.
Check and Top Off Fluids
Before putting your car into storage, make sure all vital fluids are at the appropriate levels. This includes engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. If your car will be stored for more than 30 days, consider an oil change—even if it’s not yet due. Old oil can contain contaminants that harm engine components during inactivity.
Also, ensure the fuel tank is at least half full to minimize condensation. Adding a fuel stabilizer can prevent gasoline from deteriorating over time and help protect the fuel system.
Preserve the Battery
A car battery naturally loses charge over time, and if left unattended, it can die completely. There are a couple of options to avoid this:
If your vehicle is stored in a garage, invest in a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep it charged at safe levels.
If storage is truly long-term, consider disconnecting the negative battery terminal to reduce battery drain.
This ensures that your vehicle will start without hassle when you’re ready to use it again.
Tire Care Is Essential
Tires can develop flat spots if a vehicle sits in one place too long. Inflate all tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure before storage. If possible, move the vehicle a few feet every few weeks to redistribute the weight. For very long-term storage, consider placing the car on jack stands to reduce pressure on the tires entirely.
Protect Against Pests and Moisture
Rodents can be a surprising threat to vehicles in storage. Close all vents, windows, and the tailpipe with breathable material to deter them from entering. Place a moisture-absorbing desiccant pack inside the cabin to prevent mold and mildew, especially if you’re storing the vehicle in a humid location.
Choose the Right Storage Environment
Whenever possible, store your car in a dry, enclosed space like a garage. Use a breathable car cover designed for long-term storage—avoid plastic tarps, which can trap moisture and cause paint damage.
At DRIVELUX MOTORS, we pride ourselves on offering high-quality vehicles that are ready for both adventure and downtime. With proper storage, your investment stays protected no matter how long it’s parked.
